Sol Tax (1907-1996) was a prominent cultural anthropologist. He completed a Bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1931, a M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago (1932 and 1935). Fred Eggan was born in Seattle, Washington on September 12, 1906. His parents, Alfred J. and Olive Smith Eggan, later relocated to Lake Forest, Illinois, a north suburb of Chicago. In 1923 Eggan came to the University of Chicago as an undergraduate and continued on to earn an M.A. in psychology with a minor in anthropology in 1928. Joan Rosenfels Eggan (1906-1999) photographer and psychotherapist, well known for her photographs of anthropologists. As the wife of University of Chicago Professor of Anthropology Fred Eggan, she accompanied her husband on research trips to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and England where she photographed many local people.
